Posts: 12 (07/12/02 13:14:54) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Tags : None Hi, Ive been using my new 7878 for about 2 months, and love it except for one pesky problem. I am getting a Hi-Temp Warning when the unit isnt hot. Chili night, windows cracked, and about 60 degrees in the car in the morning and the cd player wont work. The radio will, but the CD player will not. If I press "Eject", the face slides down but the disc wont eject, and I cannot get the door to close. After about 5 minutes, it closes automagically and plays fine. If I have no disc in the drive and it displays Hi-Temp, it does not allow a disc to be inserted, and still remains in the open state, until it closes itself, then it works fine. Im near Philladelphia, PA, and it has been HOT this summer, but the CD player works fine when hot. It just doesnt work when this message pops up, often in cooler climates than when used. It ONLY happens right after I turn the car on. It doesnt happen every time. The stereo is wired correctly, It gets plenty of ventilation. Anyone else see this? SHould I take it back for repairs? Posts: 0 (07/12/02 15:54:25) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	The HU has a internal fan that exits at the rear. Check to make sure that it has enough clearance to opperate efficiently. Also, ensure that the installed space is somewhat ventilated (not an enclosed pocket). Hope this helps.

I Installed the stereo in a more proper fashion, sunken into the dash about 1/2" more than standard kits to mount flush and not catch a theives eye. This leaves about 1/2" behind it for airflow. There is nothing but a minimal storage bin under it. I mounted a probe right next to the fan and the temperature was 100F. "Hi Temp" warning. Uhhg. after a few minutes of driving, I ejected the disc and reinserted it and things were fine, but the probe read 105F. Strange. maybe because it was displacing the warm air. I highly doubt it though. I have no air conditioning. The car and interior heats up during driving, especially in gridlock. No problems playing, except when it has been siting awhile and is turned on. Key things: It ONLY happens within the first few minutes of ignition. It doesnt allow eject and wont allow the face to close while in the "Hi Temp warning mode" It displays "Hi Temp" then after about 30 seconds displays "Error" Then after another 30 or so seconds displays the track info and PAUSE. It will not unpause. At that point I eject and reinsert and everything is fine. No jokes about value of car v. stereo please ;-)

Assuming that you have enough wire on your connector, extend the HU out of the dash, then check for proper operation. If this still fails, you may have a defective unit. The temperatures you indicate should not normally trigger the HI TEMP sensor. However, 1/2" clearance in the back will impede proper operation of the fan. Suggest that you provide more clearance. As a note, while you have the HU out for troubleshooting, verify that the fan is operational. If for some reason the fan is not operating, it will most certainly trigger the HI TEMP sensor very quickly. Also insure, in the mounted position, that nothing pokes into the fan opening to keep it from rotating. I've seen that happen before. Hope this helps.

Posts: 15 (07/13/02 22:26:53) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	i had the same problem and i couldn't get the cd out. next day i used the reset button and it spit out the cd. then it wouldn't accept cds anymore! brought it in for service and found out the IC was fried. waited for it to get fixed for a month before i totally freeked on the guy and he called apline about it so they gave me a brand new 7878 about three months ago. no problems to report with my second 7878. my 7878 was one built in july of 2001. i actually bought the 3rd 7878 availble in canada! anyways, my current one was built in november 2001 so maybe they fixed something to make it more reliable?

I wanted to find the article and post here for Lizard king but fortunately you replied already. Lizard King, After you try Dancer's method of taking it out, it should confirm if the hu is faulty. My hu is also f###ing hot after playing for 30min, but so far no hi temp warning. my cd are all super hot when I eject them. maybe due to the 3 laser pickup system of the F#1 cd transport?? I am staying in a tropical country, so u can also imagine the temperature here... I hope ur hu has warranty... cheers

Checked with the dealer, he has not heard of this, but another customer took back a 7878 for another reason and Alpine replaced it with a 7894. He demeanded something better, and they gave in and gave him one without an internal amp. Hopefully I will not get screwed here. I bought the 7878 because i liked it. I do not like the current other models. My unit is not hot to touch. the discs are not hot. I just get "hi temp" warnings.

My dealer being in good graces with Alpine got me a core replacement and i haven't had a problem since. But the 7878 does run hot, it must be all the processing power, there is a lot of extra electronic onboard compared to decks of the past. The other thing an Alpine tech support guy told me was the deck should be run directly to the battery with 10-12 gauge. All the extra power requirement might draw too much for the factory wiring and that there is a thermal overload fuse on the input circuitry inside the deck. Whether this is true or a put on it may explain why so many of us have had this problem.

Posts: 0 (07/16/02 06:27:35) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	To further lessen the power draw (therefore, heat dissipation), you can activate the Blackout mode. Constant display activity causes heat on both the display module and the internal power regulation circuits. Hope this helps.

During the winter last year I had problems where I would get in my car & turn it on and the hu would not come on, I had to reset it with that a pen to get it to turn on and then lost all my settings. This happened for a while but not too frequently so I never got it fixed. Then a few months ago, I would get CD-ERR messages on my display part way through the CD. Then I started getting HI-TEMP messages. Eventually the CD stopped working all together so that I can only use the radio. I finally took it into good guys. Good thing I bought the extended warranty. However Good Guys was still a bitch about getting it fixed. I sent it in the 1st time May 13th 2002, I got it back promptly on May 28th. They said they had to sodder something. When I put it in my car, had same problem. CD worked for about 2 minutes. Took it right back to them. Then they shipped it out to Alpine this time. I called every week after 3 weeks and they said it was still being services, that they needed a part that was backordered. They said I wouldn't get it back until Aug 15th. I said f*ck that and asked to talk to operations manager at good guys, and they had 2 units left at some other good guys store they had shipped to this store so I could just get a replacement. I've had the replacement now for 2 weeks. No problems so far.... (knock on wood). I originally got my 1st unit Aug 2001, so it was one of the first batches released. I'm hoping the replacement unit was from a later release and they got these problems fixed. Despite these stubborn problems, I simply love this unit. I love the dhe bass modes, the makers eq, the divider and especially the mp3 playback. I really hope it doesn't give me any more problems.

He insists that they will not cover warranty as it was not installed by a certified Alpine installer. hmm...big amounts of bullshit there. I let one person touch my car; my mechanic who happens to be my uncle. NOONE ELSE. Period. If it was a cost issue, I wouldnt be shopping for Alpine, would I? UHHG This is going to be a major pain in the ass. I can see it now. Ill finally get the unit sent back to Alpine just in time for winter (i use a motorcycle mostly in the summer months) and the whole winter ill spend in my car without a stereo. Alpine wont find the problem and send the unit back still not working correctly. Maybe im just being pesimistic, but damn, i dont see this thing turning out good.

Posts: 15 (07/19/02 23:41:56) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	yes that was me. i still get 'ERROR' messages now and again and i have to eject the CD and re-insert it to get it working again. come to think of it, i did this for the longest time with my 1st unit. then i figured out that when i got the 'ERROR' message i could use the source button to switch to tuner and back to cd to get it working - after i did that a few times she blew the IC (i think thats what they called it). my advice is if you get the 'ERROR' eject and re-load the disc to avoid chaos!

Posts: 12 (07/21/02 07:14:30) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Hey Jetstorm, That is exactly what is happening with my unit. First I get the "Hi Temp" message, then i get track info, then "Error". If I wait for the Error message, I can eject the disc, and reinsert. If I change source to radio then back to CD, it plays fine. So if this is happening to your 2nd unit, does this mean I can expect that I wont have this problem solved? (Bug?) I find this highly discouraging. Thanks for all of your info! Jeff

If Alpine requires that i have my unit installed by one of thier installers, then I will return my unit. I can install a HU just fine, and dont want the issue of someone monkeying around with my car. If they are THAT concerned about installations, then they shouldnt seel through crutchfield, and insist that retailers install for free (by upping the retail cost about $50 im sure). Jeff out.
